What is Body Stress Release?

BODY STRESS RELEASE IS: a health care technique which focuses on releasing the tension stored in the physical structures of body, thereby restoring the body to optimal health. It is a gentle technique that facilitates the body’s natural healing process and provides effective relief from various forms of pain, tension, discomfort and other health issues caused by stress accumulation.

BSR IS SAFE AND NATURAL.  It is appropriate for all ages from infants to the elderly.  It is suitable for everyone as a regular maintenance health regime as everyone accumulates body stress.  Often people do not realise that they are not functioning optimally as they become used to feeling less than 100% well.  Then they discover BSR!

BSR DOES NOT INVOLVE THE USE OF:  machines, medication, massage, manipulation, pressure points or energy meridians.  BSR works logically and practically on the body, releasing stress from physical lines of tension.

THE BSR TECHNIQUE:  The client remains fully dressed and lies down on the Body Stress Release bed.  Firstly the practitioner identifies the lines of tension and sites of stress by using the body as a bio-feedback monitor.  The practitioner then carries out a series of releases using mostly the thumb and light pressure or impulses in specific directions.  These act as messages to the brain, alerting it to the stress that has been stored in the area.

EFFECTS OF BSR:  The muscles are encouraged to release stored tension and as a result, the nerve compression is released.  This upgrades the communication system within the body and encourages the body to re-connect to its own self-healing capacity and inner body wisdom.  This leads to the general upgrading of the whole system.  When the muscles release they resume their normal supportive role and more energy is available for everyday life.  When tension is released this is usually accompanied by feelings of general wellbeing.

The Origins and Growth of BSR

Ewald and Gail Meggersee, were the pioneers of Body Stress Release. They established their first practice in Cape Town, South Africa in 1981. Many of their clients, including Ewald Meggersee himself, had unsuccessfully tried conventional medical treatments. Ewald was the primary guinea pig and so they knew how effective BSR was! He had gone from being a near cripple, to no longer experiencing physical pain and to regaining his strength. The news spread fast as more and more clients started to reap the benefits of this incredible technique. It then became evident that additional practitioners were required. In 1987, the first course for new practitioners was held. BSR has expanded globally and now includes practitioners in 22 countries, two training academies and three associations – a testament to the technique’s success.

Who needs BSR?

Body Stress Release is suitable for for anybody!  This includes babies, children and the elderly.  Body stress may also exist without the individual actually experiencing any pain or stiffness, the person may just have become accustomed to feeling less than 100% well.

BSR for babies and children

Body Stress Release may help infants and children with the following:
Constant crying for no apparent reason is a common symptom of body stress in the neck in babies.
When the nappy is being changed and hips are lifted and baby cries. This may be an indication that there is body stress in the lower back.
Constipation may be a result of the impact of body stress on the nervous system.
Colic may result from stress in the diaphragm region.
When a toddler refuses to walk and constantly asks to be carried, or complains of painful legs (so-called growing pains) he or she is most likely to have lower back stress.
An inward turning of the feet can be a result of body stress affecting the muscles of the legs,
Bed wetting may be a result of an interruption of the the nerves being supplied to the bladder due to body stress in the lower back or abdomen.
A child with neck tension may start to be disruptive at school and struggle to concentrate.
A child may be restless and unable to sit still if there is body stress in the lower back.

IMPORTANT: Body Stress Release is not a means of diagnosing or treating any illness or condition. It simply focuses on finding and releasing tension that has built up so that the body’s natural ability to maintain and heal itself can be supported.

What to expect after releases

If body stress has occurred recently then usually the recovery process is rapid, and equilibrium and muscle tone are quickly restored. The client may experience immediate relief from pain and muscle stiffness as pressure is released from the nerves. Temporary distortion of posture may also be rectified immediately.

If, however, the body stress has been present for an extended period of time, it may well be necessary to have a series of consecutive releases over time, allowing the layers of tense muscles to gradually return to their normal tone.

Temporary physical adaptations may occur

Some individuals may initially feel tingling or warmth after the communication and energy flow has been restored. In some instances, there can be a temporary increase in pain as the feeling returns to nerves that were previously numbed. As areas with diminished sensation regain normal nerve
function this healing pain can be temporarily experienced.

The client may experience a tightening of surface muscles as the wisdom of the body directs the surface muscles to tighten in order to restrict mobility in order to allow the underlying tissues to repair and heal. This allows for minimal irritation to the underlying structures as they heal.
The coming and going of stiffness and pain is a natural part of the path back to optimal health.

The Healing Process

There is frequently an immediate improvement in in communication when the nerve compression is released. This could lead to the improvement of organ function. Individuals frequently report that conditions they had not previously mentioned, such as bladder issues, constipation, heartburn and indigestion etc. have disappeared.

Typically, physical changes are accompanied by feelings of general wellbeing. Chronic tiredness can result from the muscles locking up in layers like a protective corset. The body’s energy is used up while holding the muscles in this defensive position. The muscles resume their normal supportive role when the tension is released. As a result, more energy is available for everyday life.
