I came across Body Stress Release in my 30’s when I was experiencing stress and discomfort, resulting from the operation I had as a 15-year-old teenager.  I could not believe how I felt when I got off the Body Stress Release bed.  I thought to myself ‘so this is how it feels to feel normal and balanced!’  Each person experiences BSR differently according to where their stress lies and for how long they have had it.  Arriving at permanent relief can take longer, but the profound effect of the release was immediately apparent for me.

I was sold on Body Stress Release and after some time I decided to study it. I qualified in 2010 from the Body Stress Release Academy in Rondevlei in the Garden Route, and moved immediately to the beautiful town of Hermanus to start up my first practice.

In January 2022 I settled into my new practice room next to C-Beyond Health in the Hemel en Aarde Village. I enjoy the peaceful atmosphere here, and love the delightful garden courtyard with the sounds of the birds outside my door.
Alongside BSR, I still manage to include art in my life as I periodically facilitate one-off process art workshops for adults, and facilitate therapeutic art sessions for children and adults with special needs at Camphill School and Farm. My other great love is nature and all that is natural.  This is one of the reasons I love Body Stress Release!

I love hiking in the mountains, swimming in rivers and walking along the cliff paths.   Pottering in my vegetable garden and tending to my fruit trees also gives me much pleasure!

My philosophy

A primary desire of mine is knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of others by facilitating or ‘midwifing’ healing processes.

Through Body Stress Release, with its ability to assist the body to tap into its own healing wisdom, I know I am. I have realised how much I have learnt and grown from working with my own back challenges, and those of others through the years, and feel honoured to be able to share this wisdom and knowledge with others.

My background

My early years

Growing up

I was born in Zimbabwe and came to South Africa when I was 13 years old.  Soon after that I was diagnosed with scoliosis and had to wear a back brace while attending school in Cape Town.  I was operated on at the age of 15 when 10 of my vertebrae were fused and a Harington rod was inserted.  Fortunately, the operation was a success and did not limit my great curiosity for life, travel, languages, philosophy, art and trying new things!  Later in life I discovered BSR which helped me release stress and tension caused by the operation.

Early adult years

In my 20’s my experiences were fairly vast as I was very curious about life, and finding out ‘who I was in the world’ and what inspired me.  My experiences included developing and opening a homemade food and catering business, starting my own tour company – Cape Escape Tours – with a partner (which ran successfully for several years) and teaching English as a foreign language in Cape Town and Italy.  I knew I wanted to work with people but was not sure about the fields I would eventually choose.

Therapeutic work in general, and art – with its therapeutic qualities, had always been great loves of mine. In my late 20’s I started working as an illustrator for children and adult books which I did for 3 years and in my 30’s I qualified as an ‘Astar Trained Facilitator’ offering therapeutic art courses to adult groups.  I did this for 6 years, and still offer one-off workshops periodically.   My art experience went on to include heading up the Arts Programme at Enlighten Education Trust for 6 years.  This included teaching visual arts to teenagers from Zwelihle and giving teacher training to teachers from the Overberg in partnership with the Overberg Education Department.

Today

Alongside BSR, art still plays an important part in my life.  I create from my own studio as a beloved pastime, and facilitate one-off process art workshops for adults periodically.  At also facilitate therapeutic art sessions for adults with special needs at Camphill Farm on a part time basis.

What people are saying

Ashleigh is professional and considered in her approach. It is clear that she draws on a lot of experience. She also provides lots of good advice to encourage healing. While I visited her to overcome a knee injury, I’ve found body stress with Ashleigh to have also helped with stress. I highly recommend her.

For me the experience with this sort of practitioner comes down to the professionalism and empathy of the person working on you. Ashleigh certainly attains both those markers and is friendly and very competent. The release and relief from a back that was in spasm was 80% with the first session… I am going back for more. Thank you Ashleigh!
